The dialogue between urban and rural, now a major political issue in the US, is deeply personal to me. I'm from a mid-sized town in the middle of Missouri. Growing up there, all I wanted was to leave. Looking back now that I have moved on, I feel grateful that my upbringing gave me an understanding and an appreciation for both the city and the country, and for the people who live in both.

The goal of this project was to create a visual representation of this dichotomy, as well as to pay personal homage to my hometown. On the text side of the postcards, I set excerpts from Georges Perec's Species of Spaces and Other Pieces concerning the city and country. The postcards can be flipped over and put together to form an illustrated map of (a romanticized version of) my hometown. The idea is that while the correspondence between city and country is disparate, demonstrated by the two sets' different visual styles and typographic systems, they come together to form a whole on the back—they depend on each other to create a full image.
